Tips for a Great PowerPoint Presentation

Depending on your session location within the Titanic Belfast you may be presenting on a large projection screen, or on smaller mounted TVs.

1. Start with Structure

  • Lead with a clear agenda slide.
  • Use the “Rule of Three” for main points – people remember in threes.
  • Design with a beginning (context), middle (insights), and end (action).

2. Design for Clarity

  • Stick to one idea per slide.
  • Use large fonts (minimum 24pt).
  • Contrast text and background, light on dark or dark on light.
  • Leave white space. It gives the audience breathing room.

3. Limit the Words

  • Max 6 bullet points per slide.
  • Max 6 words per bullet.
  • Replace text with visuals wherever possible (charts, icons, photos).

4. Use Visuals with Purpose

  • Only include charts that tell a story, label key takeaways.
  • Use icons or diagrams to explain processes or systems.
  • Avoid low-quality stock photos and clip art.

5. Keep Transitions Simple

  • Stick to basic fades or appear/disappear.
  • Avoid distracting animations—they rarely add value.

6. Engage, Don’t Read

  • Speak to the audience, don’t read your slides.
  • Use the slides to support your story, not tell it for you.

7. Practice Timing

  • Rehearse aloud and time yourself.
  • Edit ruthlessly if you’re running long.

8. End with Impact

  • Use a call-to-action or a key takeaway slide.
  • Leave time for questions.
  • Thank the audience

Design Tips

  • Create your slide deck in 16:9 standard ratio
  • Use standard fonts to avoid issues with software/OS versions
  • If using a Mac or Online tool, test your presentation on a PC PowerPoint for formatting (Office can be iffy!)
